I always tried to think out of the box, implement some ideas those others even could not imagine. May I talk boastful, but talk straight without any economic, political and social boundaries. In this page I will discuss some of the current issues related to sustainable development in India and world as well, and try to present an independent view point that would encourge all to think differently.
Disclaimer: The issues of My Views will be uploaded on weekends about the most pressing or alarming issue of sustainability of that week. The views presented would only be my personal opinion, not the organization I belong to.
It is the most difficult thing in life to accept the guilt before blaming others when everyone is doing the same offence. Global Warming has become so household word through media, kid's learning lessons in school etc. but we still love to blame others for this. Common people blame the big polluters, petroleum companies, NGOs blame the government and companies blame the nature. How many of us
Its 9.40 PM, May 16, 2014. Just a few hours ago Indians have chosen their 14th Prime Minister and a single party majority after almost 25 years! So, there should a strong government and very strong PM. Everything should now cooled down after months long electrion ordeal under the scorching sun. The PM, probably first time in India, is elected officially by the people. Now everyone concerned about Indian democracy should be relieved - the dance of democracy has settled down in search of stability, a new hope for development. There would be no Tehelka behind the scene to purchase MPs for proving majority, no one will accept the chair without the power to decide. Now, we can bindasly say 'Cool' and even say 'Cooler'.
Is it so straight forward, is it the time to be utterly optimistic to solve all the problems India is facing for years? Is it really the 'good time' on the way?
Let me forget that I belong to Bengal that was ruled by the Communists for years, let me forget that I have seen the inside out of the biggest (India) and strongest (USA) democracies in the world. Let me remember just that I am still a Student of Science and Dreamer for Sustainable Development. Let me admit that my age is only 33, political views are weak, social views are broadly unrealistic and am a novice in the arena of economics. Still I would like to make you think on some very basic issues those will surely going to affect us in near future and probably now kept hidden.
WHAT IF India becomes the world's biggest economy!
It is said that India is getting a pro-business PM for the first time. So, he should be able to make the Indian economy soar. But more important are the questions - how far to go and how long will it take to bring the Rupee back to level against the US Dollar it had just 5 years ago? Will he be successful to bring black money for India? Rather more important is how he can stop hawallas, is it really possible?! He may continue with Raghuram Rajan as the Governor of RBI, but will it stop the Rupee to check sliding further and go up? There are further deeper reasons lies for instability of Indian economy, and most important is revenue sharing and resource utilization? Can a pro-business politician manage to improve the social economy? Further can he stop mafias from wasteful usage of natural resources to save Indian economy in future? Drilling for more fossil fuel may never yield enough to meet the energy hunger of the industries. Many already have talked about reform in the Indian energy sector, nothing much has been done. But is that reform would be viable until renewable energy sources are fully utilized? Gujarat has installed solar canal, pan-India replication should be the goal and then economy may hinder the development - will you be ready to pay a little more for clean, green power?
WHAT IF India becomes the most world's powerful democracy!
India has been known as world's biggest democracy, but never could exercise the power in the fullest. There has many instances that laws are suppressed by the ordinances, emergency act established, rampant corruption not allowing the governance to reach the people or vice versa. Though India is driven by the Parliament, at least as per the constitution, but at many instances it has become the circus arena with bunch of jokers. RTI activists are being killed and any official protest just makes the process delay rather go for a solution. Will this scenario change drastically with a strong PM at the lead of governance? It is true that in Indian political history, the leaders with strong personalities, like Subhas Chandra Bose, Ballavbhai Patel, Lalkrishna Advani and so on never got the leadership of the nation. Probably political leaders scared of bring them front and let him lead at his will. Will the same genre of leaders and bureaucratic set up allow the PM to drive the system? And more important is will he exercise his power to do the right thing for the people irrespective of religion and caste? Some old records do show much confidence. The eradication of corruption which is such deep-rooted that even the office bearers at government services are openly ask for money to do a favour - is not kids' play. But until the government get hold of much of this, probably overlooking the conflict of interest in business, will ever the Indian democracy stand up on its feet?!
WHAT IF India becomes a secular country?!
Yes, India is a secular country by its laws, by the constitution. But how far it has been exercised? Have you not seen numerous communal riots across the country, have not thousands of innocent people either killed, wounded or forced out their places due to these riots every year? Though you chant the same national song, respect the same national flag, there lies a secret sentiment of your cast and religious identity. And that is what political or business leaders sometimes play with to reach their goal, leave the innocents suffer. Where is the government of the people, are their duties restricted to just rehabilitate the survivors, without trying to stop the killing? In India each and every political party, even those who claim to be secular, are actually damn fail to stop major riots. The strong PM also has similar credential, but carefully executed the plan without a proof of involvement. But can he forget his constitutional duties of a Chief Minister? Can he forget that he started his political career as a volunteer of a pro-religious community which was briefly banned by the government! Can he admit that the one of his promise - to build a temple - is against the will of the country or court verdict? It’s difficult to be impartial, to be fair, to do the justice, even if you take the oath on paper, and may be more difficult for them who are strong from inside and have tendency to dictate the others. The concern will be there, but with a hope that he would be able keep the balance among his commitments.
Hope he remains open for the people,
listen to the pople and
work for the people of India!
